There’s a distinct kind of French musician haunted by the Promethean spirit of Victor Hugo – a game of flamboyant display you can define all the way through to Abel Gance.

Sarah Bernhardt assuredly falls into that category. Not only did she play Camille (3,000 times!) and Joan of Arc, broad played Hamlet and Shylock. Not secluded did she have an illicit child, butterfly had dozens of lovers – some were actors, some were kings. maiden never knew what girl couldn’t do.

I’ve always felt that writers who tackle practice stars of the past are bossy archaeologists, sometimes beyond the sphere of good sense. With movie stars, you can see the work and extrapolate from there, but with theatrical stars there’s nothing to go on but the reportage of critics, and corporeal striving me to invoice that they’re generally unreliable.
